Job Summary
The Facilities Maintenance Technician – Bus Maintenance performs general cleaning, servicing, and maintenance support duties for MATA buses, maintenance facilities, and equipment. This position helps ensure that fleet vehicles and maintenance areas remain clean, safe, and operational by supporting mechanics and maintenance personnel with vehicle preparation, fueling, sanitation, and general upkeep of the maintenance environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform general cleaning and upkeep duties in the bus maintenance facility, including shop areas, equipment, and service bays.
- Conduct visual inspections of bus interiors and exteriors to identify cleanliness or safety concerns.
- Check vehicle fluids including antifreeze, oil levels, transmission fluid, and brake fluid as directed.
- Fuel buses and other fleet vehicles as required.
- Clean and sanitize buses and fleet vehicles according to established sanitation standards.
- Steam clean engines and mechanical components on buses and maintenance vehicles.
- Clean and maintain shop equipment and maintenance work areas.
- Assist with disposal of waste materials and maintain cleanliness of maintenance bays and surrounding grounds.
- Perform minor facility upkeep such as patching surfaces and maintaining shop areas.
- Distribute sand or salt during inclement weather using MATA equipment as needed.
- Pick up parts, supplies, or equipment from warehouses or vendors using a MATA vehicle.
- Support bus maintenance staff with general labor tasks as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of bus maintenance operations.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
High school diploma or GED required.
Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must be willing to work assigned shifts including evenings, weekends, or holidays.
- Ability to operate cleaning and maintenance equipment such as buffers, pressure washers, steam cleaners, forklifts, or similar tools.
- Ability to read and understand work orders and written instructions.
- Ability to complete documentation and communicate effectively with maintenance staff.
- Must comply with MATA’s Drug and Alcohol Policy.
- Regular and reliable attendance is required.
- Must follow all safety policies and procedures within the maintenance facility.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
- Extensive standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure to diesel fumes, oils, chemicals, noise, and varying weather conditions.
- Ability to climb ladders or equipment when necessary.
- Ability to crawl or work beneath vehicles when required.
- Ability to hear instructions and communicate clearly in a maintenance environment.
- Visual acuity required to perform inspections and operate equipment safely.
